It’s Bear and Chicken‘s book birthday, and I’m pleased to have author-illustrator Jannie Ho on the blog to celebrate!

Tells us a bit about Bear and Chicken:

BEAR AND CHICKEN is my debut picture book as author/illustrator. It is about a bear who finds a chicken frozen in the snow, and brings it home to try to defrost it. As Chicken wakes up, she fears that Bear is actually prepping to eat him. It is a friendship tale that teaches kids things are not always as they seem, while learning a thing or two about making soup with a friend. Bear’s soup recipe is included in the book!

Tell us three things Bear is grateful for, and why?

Bear is thankful for friendship with Chicken, a warm fire, and a great vegetable soup recipe to make for guests. Chicken is grateful she wasn’t made into lunch!

As the author-illustrator, what picture book(s) are you thankful for?

I’m thankful for Busy, Busy Town by Richard Scarry. My family and I moved to the US when I was little, and it was one of the first English picture books my parents purchased for my sister and I. I fell in love with it immediately. I loved (and still love) the anthropomorphic animal world that Scarry created, which felt safe and sweet, like a warm hug. I now strive for the same feeling in my own work.

Please share one person that’s made a big impact on your picture book career.

I have to give much credit to my art agent, Mela Bolinao, for believing in me over 10 years ago when I was starting out. She gave me a chance and it has been a priceless learning experience ever since. I’m grateful to be part of this industry that I love and have much passion for. I must also mention Julie Matysik at Running Press Kids, who acquired BEAR AND CHICKEN and made me officially an author!

What are you hopeful for (or looking forward to) in 2018?

BEAR AND CHICKEN is just being released, so I look forward to sharing this book with as many readers as possible. I hope to make many more books in 2018.

Thank you and happy book birthday, Jannie!
